Dear friends; yesterday, 10th of December, was Human Rights Day, with a lot of preparatory work for next year to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. To mark this important occasion, we organised events and online actions throughout last week. We also took part in international events including a few in Geneva, Switzerland, which will be covered in detail in a separately posted album.
Having been a partner organisation of No Hate Speech Movement (NHSM), the Council of Europe’s youth led campaign launched in 2013 to counter hate speech and promote human rights online, we promoted its final action day to mark the Human Rights Day. You can find all the information about this year’s initiatives and the list of suggested actions on NHSM official website in the section dedicated to the Action Day.
Here is our summary report about our UK-based actions:
We contributed to the Action Day by holding an informative session following our film screening (Euro-Mernet Film Club: “Priest’s Children”) on the 5th December at our usual venue The Blue Man. After the presentation, we distributed NHSM campaign materials and we advised our guests on the types of action they can take to support the action day. We also invited some of the guests to take pictures together with us, branding the motto adopted by the NHSM campaign for Human Rights Day 2017: “Love Human Rights”.
We also dedicated a section of our weekly Radio Euro-Mernet show, aired on the 7th December, to the promotion of the NHSM campaign and the action day to mark Human Rights Day, informing our audience about NHSM free online resources and briefing them about the various initiatives linked to this important international observation. We finally took a few pictures of our very own team to express Euro-Mernet’s love for Human Rights!
While this will be the last NHSM Action Day promoted directly by the Council of Europe, we are committed to work relentlessly to counter hate speech and promote human rights in the UK and all across the Euro-Mediterranean region.
In the new year we will commit ourselves to keeping the momentum and preserving the legacy of a movement that has consistently grown over the last 5 years thanks to the combined efforts of countless passionate activists, determined human rights defenders and those defiant souls who stand against all forms of hatred and intolerance.
